Synopsis: Vihang A. Naik throws light on the life of a city in all its shades, glory and misery in his City Times and Other Poems. It is an anthology of his intuitive and philosophical poems. The Poems are divided in 6 segments that include: Love Song of a Journey Man, Mirrored Man, The Path of Wisdom, At the Shore, City Times, and Self Portrait.
I liked the way he used different styles for the poems. In some of the poems the words were arranged to simulate a shape. Like in the poem “I”, it was similar shape to an eye. Naik uses words to create haunting pictures in the mind where he expounds on some aspects of city life like homelessness in “A Sympathiser For Underdogs”. I have always enjoyed reading poetry and feel that the poems definitely would be more effective if a picture was attached although the words used are eloquent enough to bring up images in the mind. Another favorite for me was the inspirational poem “When You Do Not Find” . It is yet another example of the diversity of poems available in the book. It speaks of perseverance and hope. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys reading thought provoking poetry.
